Day 1 – Sunday 31 May 2020 – ARRIVAL, PORTLAND, LAN SU CHINESE GARDEN – DINNER INCLUDED

  • Arrive at Portland, Oregon International Airport (PDX) where you will be picked up by our luxury high-top van and taken to your hotel.
  • At your leisure with the ticket in your welcome kit, visit Lan Su Chinese Garden, a walled Chinese garden enclosing a full city block, built by artisans from Suzhou, China. The garden is home to numerous flowering plants, trees and shrubs. A restful tea house is in the garden for relaxing refreshment.
  • At 18:00, we assemble in the lobby for dinner and to meet our local guide who will tell us more about the surprises, private gardens and behind-the-scenes experiences we will be seeing during the tour.

Day 2 – Monday 1 June 2020 – PORTLAND JAPANESE GARDEN, CRYSTAL SPRINGS RHODODENDRON GARDEN, FOOD CART POD, PRIVATE GARDENS – BREAKFAST INCLUDED

  • We start the day by visiting The Portland Japanese Garden, considered one of the finest Japanese gardens in the world. The Portland Japanese Garden is a symphony of rock, water and plants and we’ll enjoy the peaceful garden in the morning, before it is open to the general public.
  • Next, we visit Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden, a magnificent 10-acre garden featuring more than 2,500 rhododendrons, azaleas and other plants in a setting of paths, fountains and small waterfalls.
  • We then visit one of Portland’s famous food cart pods for an independent lunch.
  • The rest of the afternoon will be spent two private gardens outside of the central city.
  • At the end of the day, we return to our hotel for an evening spent at leisure.  Dinner on your own.

Day 3 – Tuesday 2 June 2020 – COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE, VISTA HOUSE, MULTNOMAH FALLS, STERNWHEELER CRUISE, BRIDGE OF THE GODS – BREAKFAST & LUNCH INCLUDED

  • Today we explore the protected Natural Scenic Area of the Columbia River Gorge.  Cut by the colossal power of glaciers at the end of the Ice Age, the region was home to indigenous tribes for millennia due to the vast supply of salmon, which could literally be scooped from the river.  The Lewis and Clark Expedition came through the canyon in 1805, opening the Pacific Northwest for America’s expansion.
  • We will stop at Vista House with sweeping views of the river and gorge, and then on to Multnomah Falls, an iconic, slender waterfall.
  • Lunch will be in the historic Multnomah Falls Lodge after which we continue east to the charming small town of Cascade Locks. Here, we board the sternwheeler for an afternoon river cruise to see The Gorge from a whole different perspective whilst listening to fascinating stories about the area.
  • On our way back to our Portland hotel, we cross the Bridge of the Gods and travel along the north side of the Gorge.   The rest of the day is at leisure.  Dinner on your own.

Day 4 – Wednesday 3 June 2020 – PRIVATE GARDEN, ROGERSON CLEMATIS GARDEN, THE OREGON GARDEN RESORT AND SPA – BREAKFAST & LUNCH INCLUDED

  • We first visit a very special private garden on the banks of the Willamette River.
  • Our next stop will be the Rogerson Clematis Garden which contains the most comprehensive collection of clematis in North America.  The property also includes a heritage garden featuring plants that were available before World War I.
  • We continue south through lovely farmland and the fertile Willamette Valley, home of numerous commercial nurseries, plant hybridizers, greenhouses, blueberry fields, hops, hazelnuts and growers.
  • After lunch at Filberts Farmhouse Kitchen, we arrive at The Oregon Garden Resort & Spa and you will have the rest of the afternoon and evening to explore The Oregon Garden.  The narrated tram ride will give you an overview of the 80-acre botanical garden and you can also explore it on foot if you prefer. You may also consider calling ahead to book an optional spa treatment, massage or facial.  Your room key allows you access to the gardens when it is closed to the public.
  • The rest of the day is at leisure.  Dinner on your own.

Day 5 – Thursday 4 June 2020 – DEEPWOOD HOUSE & GARDENS, BUSH BARN ART CENTER, BUSH HOUSE GARDENS, GAIETY HOLLOW, SCHREINER’S IRIS GARDEN, SEBRIGHT GARDENS & NURSERY – BREAKFAST AND LUNCH INCLUDED

  • Enjoy a hearty buffet breakfast at the hotel before a full day of garden visiting.
  • First, we travel to downtown Salem, Oregon’s low-key state capital to visit Deepwood House & Gardens, a historic home surrounded by formal gardens.
  • Next, we go to nearby Bush Barn Art Center and spend some time visiting its gardens (Bush House Gardens).
  • We then walk across the street to Gaiety Hollow, the former home of Elizabeth Lord and Edith Schryver.  In 1929 Lord & Schryver set up the first woman-owned landscape architecture firm in the Pacific Northwest.  They promoted a gardening style that incorporated native plants and local plant varieties more suitable for the Pacific Northwest climate rather than the very formal gardening style which was popular at the time.
  • After lunch, we visit one of the world’s premier iris growers, Schreiner’s Iris Garden and their extraordinary display garden.  Established in 1925 on more than 200 acres, you’ll have plenty of time to walk around and marvel at all the amazing varieties of Iris that are now available worldwide thanks to the efforts of this family owned business.
  • Our final stop today will be Sebright Gardens and Nursery and their 4-acre display gardens which showcase a vast variety of hostas, ferns and epimediums.
  • We travel back to our hotel and the rest of the day is at leisure.  Dinner on your own.

Day 6 – Friday 5 June 2020 – PRIVATE GARDENS, PACIFIC BONSAI MUSEUM, RHODODENDRON SPECIES BOTANICAL GARDEN, POWELLSWOOD, DINNER IN A GARDEN – BREAKFAST, LUNCH AND DINNER INCLUDED

  • After a buffet breakfast, we head north to Seattle with a number of garden visits along the way.
  • Our first two stops will be private gardens.  We will enjoy lunch in the second garden, a 3-acre paradise that includes a formal English garden, mature fruit trees, a bamboo walk and much more.
  • We next visit the Pacific Bonsai Museum, with bonsai trees from China, Japan, Canada, Korea, Taiwan and America.  It’s the most diverse public collection of bonsai in North America and is located in a spectacular outdoor setting which was formerly the business campus of Weyerhaeuser timber and paper companies.
  • The adjacent Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden is home to the largest collection of species rhododendrons in the world. This is also home of a Victorian-style stumpery created by The Hardy Fern Foundation. Other specialty plants, including some housed in a glass conservatory, abound.
  • We next visit PowellsWood, a three-acre pleasure garden nestled against thirty-five acres of native forest and which was designed to reflect the Pacific Northwest.
  • Tonight we will have dinner together in the garden at PowellsWood before traveling to our hotel in downtown Seattle.   The rest of the evening is at leisure.

Day 7 – Saturday 6 June 2020 – SOOS CREEK BOTANICAL GARDEN, PRIVATE GARDENS – BREAKFAST & LUNCH INCLUDED

  • Today, we first visit Soos Creek Botanical Garden, a mature garden inspired by tours to Italy and England by its owners. The property also includes a heritage center focusing on Norwegian immigration and homesteading.
  • This afternoon, we’ll visit a number of private gardens and enjoy lunch in one of them.
  • After returning to our hotel why not relax a while before exploring Seattle on your own?  Dinner is on your own.

Day 8 – Sunday 7 June 2020 – CHIHULY GARDEN AND GLASS, INDEPENDENT TIME IN SEATTLE, BELLEVUE BOTANICAL GARDEN – BREAKFAST INCLUDED

  • We start the day at the Chihuly Garden and Glass, arriving early to avoid the crowds. The indoor galleries are each unique and filled with art glass masterpieces created by the studio of world-renowned artist, Dale Chihuly.  After our visit here, you will have some independent time in downtown Seattle.  There are numerous interesting places for you to visit such as the : Pike Place Market, Museum of Pop Culture (previously known as Experience Music Project), Olympic Sculpture Park, Klondike Gold Rush Historical Park,or Seattle Art Museum.
  • For lunch, why not consider having it at Collections Cafe or at the top of the symbol of Seattle, the Space Needle, built for the 1962 World’s Fair and which has recently undergone a $100 million renovation and which now includes thrilling see-through glass floors !
  • In the afternoon we meet up again and cross Lake Washington to visit Bellevue Botanical Garden, a 53-acre oasis with numerous themed gardens, all near an urban boom town which is home to Microsoft and dozens of other tech companies.
  • Before returning to our hotel, we’ll have an independent dinner in downtown Bellevue, recently named one of the best suburbs for Foodies.
  • The rest of the evening is spent at leisure.

Day 9 – Monday 8 June 2020 – FLOAT PLANE TO VICTORIA, BUTCHART GARDENS, INDEPENDENT EXPLORATION – BREAKFAST INCLUDED

  • We will visit Victoria, British Columbia today crossing over using float planes and ferry.  On arrival our coach will be waiting to give us a highlights tour of the charming city of Victoria.
  • The coach then takes us to world-famous Butchart Gardens. The 55-acre garden will be bursting with colors when we visit in June.
  • With flexible return options, you can choose to spend all day at the gardens or you can return to Victoria and explore the city’s lovely waterfront downtown.
  • We arrive back at our Seattle hotel in the evening.

Day 10 – Tuesday 9 June 2020 – FERRY, HERONSWOOD, BLOEDEL RESERVE, DINNER IN A PRIVATE GARDEN – BREAKFAST & DINNER INCLUDED

  • This morning we cross Puget Sound via ferry again to nearby Bainbridge Island where our first visit will be to the magical and recently restored Heronswood.  Originally the private garden of plantsman Dan Hinkley, who still lives nearby, the garden is now owned by the Port Gamble S’Klallam tribe which is diligently working to build community and connection to the land and nature.
  • Next we’ll have lunch (not included) in the quaint and quirky town of Poulsbo.  Often called ‘Little Norway’, the town’s Scandinavian heritage is still very important to those that live there.
  • Our final public garden of the tour will be Bloedel Reserve, where we will have a docent-led tour of the spectacular property. The 150 acre forest garden was created by a lumber baron and includes many distinct areas, including a moss garden, Japanese garden, reflecting pool, views, vistas and natural areas.
  • Our farewell dinner tonight will be in a wonderful private garden.  Afterwards, we’ll take the ferry back to Seattle and spend the rest of the evening at leisure.
