Tour Summary – What’s Included

Tour Description

This tour starts on 17 May 2024 in London. During the first evening, you will have an opportunity to meet your tour leader and fellow garden enthusiasts during complimentary welcome drinks.  Over the next five days, we will explore exceptional historic and contemporary gardens located to the northwest of London.  Highlights include the exquisite Malverleys gardens, the serene St. Timothee garden, the grand Waddesdon Manor, and the charming Waterperry Gardens. We will also visit the historic Chenies Manor House & Garden, the delightful Chesham Bois, the picturesque St. Paul’s Walden Bury, and the innovative Serge Hill, designed by Tom Stuart-Smith. The sixth day of the tour will be spent at the world-famous Chelsea Flower Show, where you will witness the work of some of the world’s best garden designers.

Our garden visits conclude on 23 May with a trip to Kew Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its historic glasshouses and expansive plant collections. The afternoon is free for you to explore London at your leisure before we gather for a group farewell dinner. We return to London for the last night of the tour, staying at the luxurious RIU Plaza Victoria. After a week of exploring some of the UK’s most beautiful gardens, you’ll leave with lasting memories and a deeper appreciation for these stunning landscapes.

17 May: Arrival in London / RIU Plaza Victoria / Welcome Drinks

Welcome to London! Upon arrival, you’ll check in at the luxurious RIU Plaza Victoria, your home for the start and end of our garden tour. Relax and prepare for the beautiful gardens you’ll explore in the coming days. You are invited to join us and your fellow tour members for drinks in the early evening.

18 May: Malverleys / St. Timothee / Danesfield House: Breakfast, Tea, Lunch & Dinner included

  • Morning: Visit the exquisite Malverleys gardens. This ten-acre garden, developed over the last twelve years, features magnificent mixed borders and a series of contrasting yew-hedged rooms, including flame borders, a cool garden, a pond garden, and a new stumpery. Several garden rooms and borders show the knowledge of the owner of this beautiful private garden in the best British traditions, combined with contemporary influences. A vegetable garden with striking fruit cages sits within a walled garden, also encompassing a white garden. Amazing views over meadows and parkland, in the garden several garden rooms, a pond, a vegetable garden, and a fruit garden. You find striking plant combinations everywhere, including a surprising use of remarkable color combinations. Meadows open out to views over the parkland.
  • Lunch: A delightful lunch will be provided at a local restaurant (included).
  • Afternoon: Explore the serene gardens of St. Timothee. This private, two-acre country garden is known for its eclectic mix of rare plants and creative landscaping. Developed over the last fifteen years, the garden was inspired by Jardin Plume, Knoll Gardens, and the late Beth Chatto’s gardens. It emphasizes a natural, wildlife-friendly approach, with perennials and ornamental grasses playing a leading role. Highlights include a box parterre, a wildlife pond, a rose terrace, and areas of long grass and beautiful mature trees.
  • Evening: End the day at the stunning Danesfield House, where you’ll spend the night.  Dinner Included

19 May: Waddesdon Manor / Waterperry Gardens / Danesfield House : Breakfast, Tea, Lunch & Dinner included

  • Morning: Discover the grandeur of Waddesdon Manor. Built by the Rothschild family, this French-style chateau boasts formal gardens that are a marvel of Victorian horticulture, with elaborate parterres, fountains, and statuary. The gardens were the vision of Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, transforming a bare hill into an exceptional example of Victorian horticulture, including formal gardens, trees, and walks. This splendid mansion houses an extensive art collection, including several Dutch masters and amazing furnishings.
  • Lunch: Enjoy a delicious lunch on the grounds of Waddesdon Manor.
  • Afternoon: Visit Waterperry Gardens, known for its beautiful borders and ornamental gardens. Originally a horticultural school for women, Waterperry features a long classical herbaceous border, a walled garden with a glasshouse containing a large Seville orange tree, the Mary Rose Garden, a rock garden, and commanding views over the Oxfordshire countryside. Tea will be included during your visit.
  • Evening: Return to Danesfield House for another restful night.  Dinner included.

20 May: Chenies Manor House & Garden / Chesham Bois / Danesfield House:  Breakfast, Tea, Lunch & Dinner included

  • Morning: Explore the historic Chenies Manor House & Garden. This Tudor manor house is surrounded by an award-winning garden with a series of intimate garden rooms, including The Sunken Garden, White Garden, Physic Garden, and Kitchen Garden with two mazes. The gardens are known for their stunning displays of tulips in spring and a variety of annuals and perennials in summer. The historic manor includes a medieval well and reputed priest hole.
  • Lunch: Enjoy lunch at a charming local spot (included).
  • Afternoon: Visit the delightful Chesham Bois. This garden offers a peaceful retreat with mature trees, lush lawns, and vibrant flower beds. Spring brings tall self-seeded Echiums, cow parsley filling the orchard, and the early-flowering Gloire de Dijon rose. A rare plant, Julia’s Surprise, adds unique charm. The garden’s history dates back 280 years with formal French-style gardens, evolving to its present three-acre size with ornamental features such as a small canal and rill.
  • Evening: Relax and unwind back at Danesfield House.

21 May: St. Paul’s Walden Bury / Serge Hill / RIU Plaza Victoria: Breakfast and Lunch included

  • Morning: Wander through the picturesque gardens of St. Paul’s Walden Bury. The childhood home of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, these Grade 1 listed gardens are a fine example of 18th-century landscape design, featuring sweeping lawns, formal terraces, and a series of garden temples and statues. The 60-acre formal woodland garden includes seasonal displays of daffodils, irises, magnolias, rhododendrons, woodland peonies, and lilies.
  • Lunch: Lunch will be served at a local restaurant (included).
  • Afternoon: Visit Serge Hill, including its Project, Plant Library, and The Barn. Serge Hill is an innovative garden combining traditional horticulture with modern ecological practices. Tom Stuart-Smith’s renowned design integrates naturalism and modernity, with The Barn being a personal garden project showcasing his expertise. The Plant Library features a diverse range of species, serving as an educational and inspirational resource.
  • Evening: Return to RIU Plaza Victoria for the night.

22 May: Chelsea Flower Show / RIU Plaza Victoria: Breakfast included

  • All Day: Spend a full day at the world-renowned Chelsea Flower Show, marveling at the stunning floral displays and innovative garden designs. This prestigious event is the highlight of the horticultural calendar, showcasing the best of garden design, plant breeding, and landscaping from around the world. Enjoy breakfast and dinner (included) as you explore the best of the best in horticulture. Your tour guide will provide tips on what to see, ensuring you make the most of your day. Return to the hotel in the evening, or stay and explore London further on your own.
  • Evening: Stay overnight at RIU Plaza Victoria.

23 May: Kew Gardens and Free Afternoon / RIU Plaza Victoria: Breakfast and Farewell Dinner

  • Morning: Visit the iconic Kew Gardens, home to an extensive collection of plants from around the world. Kew Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is renowned for its historic glasshouses, expansive arboretum, and groundbreaking scientific research. Highlights include the Palm House, the Temperate House, and the Princess of Wales Conservatory. If numbers allow, we’ll visit Kew Gardens between 9:00 and 12:00, including the world’s largest Victorian glasshouse.
  • Afternoon: Enjoy a free afternoon to explore London at your leisure.
  • Evening: Return to RIU Plaza Victoria for your final night in the city. Please join us this evening for a group farewell dinner.

24 May: Departure: Breakfast included

After a week of exploring some of the UK’s most beautiful gardens, it’s time to depart. Enjoy a final breakfast at RIU Plaza Victoria before checking out and heading home with wonderful memories of your garden tour. We hope you had a delightful experience and look forward to welcoming you on another garden tour in the future!
